harry reid can read my mind. what a relief to know he's on my side. isn't this the same government that said if you raise taxes when growth is flat it's counter productive? through the sequester process, 45% of the country believe the president is -- excuse me, 45% believe the republicans are more to blame for what's about to happen in sequester. and 32% hold the president responsibility. i don't know if that's going to reverse itself because most people also say that we have a spending problem in washington and if it comes down to sequester happens on friday and there is no dramatic events that happen, the sky doesn't open and planes stop flying and meat stops being sold, if all these things don't happen, maybe those polls will reverse. >> steve: if the economy slows down in the next couple of months, i think people will blame the president because -- the republicans have done a good job with the messaging on the president can change this, but he has at this tenth hour appeared inflexible. >> gretchen: one out of five people are paying attention to t

i had a very nice conversation with harry reid, senator reid the week before. we all understand this is difficult. scott, if it were easy to solve the big spending problem here in washington, somebody over the last 20 years would have figured it out. this is not easy to do. but the house has done its work and the president got re-elected. this is the time to lead. now, my reference to the president a couple of weeks ago was about the guts to take on his own party, to do what we all know in this town needs to be done. we've got to cut spending, we've got to change the structural spending problem that we have, and it's time to do it. i'm not going to be part of kicking the can down the road and imprisoning the future for my kids and yours. >> senator harry reid said yesterday he is used to pretty salty language. >>> australian billionaire clive palmer unveiled plans yesterday to build a replica of the "titanic." "titanic" ii will look like the original right down to the dinner menus and costumes. the new ship will sail with modern-day safety and this morning equi

harry reid almost lost his job to someone wearing a tinfoil hat hat. so i think that harry reid is going to let this die but that's how the president wins. if the president fights a battle that he knows he's doomed to fail god for bid there is a massacre or the next ten massacres he can point his finger right to the people who killed this bill and say you own this. that would be a political win for this president at a bloody cost. >> cenk: your analysis is right. but if he wanted a legislative and policy victory, of course, what he would to is go to fellow democrats as your appointing out and say hey i need your vote on this come hell or high water. it's not an easy fight. harry reid bragged that he knows about guns because his father shot himself in the head. that was the most bizarre bragging i've seen in my life and it's pathetic. i know it's a high hurdle, and i'm not putting it all on the president but this is a way of trying and being artful. >> michael: by saying it deserves a vote. it deserves a vote. of course it's grandiose but this was a "te
